Pittsburgh Panthers Tickets: Historical Overview
In the first half of the 20th century, the Pittsburgh Panthers were a college football powerhouse. From 1915-38, head coaches Pop Warner and Jock Sutherland led Pitt to plenty of victories. Over a three-year stretch (1915-17), the Panthers never lost a game.
More recently, the program recorded six top 10 finishes in a seven-year period from 1976-82. Overall, Pittsburgh has appeared in 27 bowl games. Until joining the Big East Conference in 1991, the Panthers were a football independent.
In hoops, most of Pittsburgh's success has come in the last three decades. Only five of the school's 23 NCAA tournament bids came prior to the eighties. Pitt's only visit (1940-41) to the Final Four came in the early days of the NCAA tourney. Current head coach Jamie Dixon has led the Panthers into March Madness in all of his eight seasons on the sidelines.
Championship Seasons
The Pittsburgh Panthers have won an impressive total of nine national championships in football. Eight of the titles were won by Warner and Sutherland.
In the modern era, Pittsburgh's only national championship was in the 1976 campaign. Led by Heisman Trophy winning running back Tony Dorsett, the Panthers recorded a perfect regular season under head coach Johnny Majors. In the Sugar Bowl, Pitt stopped the Georgia Bulldogs to finish as the top squad in the nation.
