Outback Bowl Tickets: Historical Overview
The Outback Bowl began in 1977 as the Hall of Fame Bowl in Birmingham. In 1986, the bowl game was moved to Tampa. From 1986-98, the Outback Bowl was held at Tampa Stadium. Since 1999, the game has taken place at Raymond James Stadium (capacity of 65,587). The venue is also the home site of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Outback Bowl has been played on New Year's Day since 1987. The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has been involved in all but four of the games since the move to Tampa. Since 1996, the Outback Bowl has had conference tie-ins with the SEC and Big 10.
Outback Bowl Tickets: Memorable Highlights
Over the last 25 years in Tampa, the Outback Bowl has enjoyed its share of memorable highlights and games. Georgia, Michigan and Penn State are tied for the most victories during the stretch with three wins apiece. Purdue quarterback Drew Brees (2000) heads the list of the notable players that have captured MVP honors at the Outback Bowl.
The 2000 contest was one of the most memorable games in the history of the event. Against the Georgia Bulldogs, Brees and the Boilermakers jumped out to a 25-0 lead in the second quarter. Georgia gradually climbed back into the game to force the matchup into overtime. The Bulldogs finished off the huge comeback with a 28-25 victory.
Two of college football's top programs have squared off twice at the Outback Bowl. In 1988, the Michigan Wolverines scored a touchdown in the final minute to knock off the Alabama Crimson Tide by a final of 28-24. Nine years later, Alabama would gain some revenge with a 17-14 triumph over Michigan.
In 2010, the second overtime game in Tampa took place. In a wild affair, the Auburn Tigers defeated the Northwestern Wildcats by a count of 38-35. With some momentum heading into the 2010 season from the victory, the Tigers would go on to capture a national championship.
While the Ohio State Buckeyes are tied for the most Outback Bowl appearances (4), the school has yet to win in Tampa.
