While the Minnesota Golden Gophers haven't been able to win too much on the football field during the last four decades, there was a time when the program was a powerhouse.
In the first half of the 20th century, the Golden Gophers captured 16 Big 10 championships! Henry Williams (1900-21) and Bernie Bierman (1932-41, 45-50) were notable coaches at Minnesota during this period.
In the early sixties, head coach Murray Warmath put the Golden Gophers on the national landscape with back-to-back trips to the Rose Bowl. Overall, Minnesota has appeared in 14 bowl games.
In basketball, the Golden Gophers have reached the NCAA tournament on 11 occasions. In 1996-97, the team reached the Final Four under head coach Clem Haskins.
Championship Seasons
The Minnesota Golden Gophers have won six national championships in football. Bierman captured five of the tittles in a span of eight seasons from 1934-41. Minnesota is one of the few programs that has ever won three consecutive (1934-36) national championships. Warmath won the school's most recent title in 1960.
On the basketball side, the university has won nine regular season conference championships. The last crown came during the Golden Gophers Final Four season of 1996-97.
