In four decades, the Fiesta Bowl has made a rapid climb up the college football postseason landscape. Fiesta Bowl tickets are always a big hit among football fans.
Fiesta Bowl Tickets: Historical Overview
In 1971, the Fiesta Bowl was formed as a way to give deserving west coast schools another postseason option. The game was originally held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona on the campus of Arizona State University. For the first seven years of the game, the champion of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) was assured of a spot in the contest. This enabled the hometown Arizona State Sun Devils to play in five of the initial seven Fiesta Bowls.
After Arizona and Arizona State joined the Pacific Conference in 1978, the Fiesta Bowl ended its arrangement with the WAC. With the ability to choose any two major teams without any conference tie-in restrictions, the Fiesta Bowl has able to emerge in the eighties as an elite postseason contest.
For the 1981 season, the Fiesta Bowl moved to New Year's Day to rival the traditional Rose, Sugar, Orange and Cotton Bowls on January 1st. In the late nineties, the Fiesta Bowl became one of the four games to be associated with the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). Every four years, the Fiesta Bowl will host the BCS National Championship Game in addition to its regular bowl matchup in the desert.
Since 2007, the Fiesta Bowl has been played at the University of Phoenix Stadium (capacity of 78,600) in Glendale.
Fiesta Bowl Tickets: Memorable Highlights
In the 1986 season, the Fiesta Bowl jumped into the national spotlight. The top two teams in the nation (Miami-Florida and Penn State) were both independent squads. With the other premier bowls unable to match the two clubs up due to conference tie-ins, the Fiesta Bowl was able to land the Hurricanes and Nittany Lions in a showdown for the national championship. Penn State upset Miami to win the championship.
A similar scenario played out two years later when the Fiesta Bowl was able to secure Notre Dame and West Virginia in a showdown for the national championship.
The 2007 Fiesta Bowl turned out to be one of the most thrilling college football games in recent memory. The upstart Boise State Broncos were a significant underdog against the mighty Oklahoma Sooners. In a shootout, the Broncos stunned the Sooners on a trick play two-point conversion in overtime for a memorable 42-41 victory.
