After beginning as an independent football program from 1903-13, the Baylor Bears joined the Southwest Conference in 1914. In the late forties, the team had its first sustained run of success. From 1948-63, the Bears reached seven bowl games.
In 1972, Grant Teaff became the school's head coach. Over 21 years on the sidelines, he guided Baylor to eight bowl games en route to becoming the winningest coach in the history of the university.
In basketball, Baylor enjoyed a brief run as a national power in the late forties. The Bears lost the NCAA title game in 1948 before making another Final Four appearance two years later. Since then, the Bears have been limited to only three trips to March Madness. However, the 2009-10 squad was able to reach the Elite Eight.
Championship Seasons
On the gridiron, the Baylor Bears have won five (1922, 24, 74, 80 and 94) conference championships. The 1980 squad won a school-record ten games. In that season, Baylor reached the Cotton Bowl but lost to Paul "Bear" Bryant and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
In hoops, the Bears have also come away with five conference titles. During Baylor's dominant run in the late forties, the Bears won four Southwest Conference crowns from 1945-46 to 1949-50.
