Since being formed in 1993, the Alamo Bowl has been held at the Alamodome (capacity of 65,000) in San Antonio. The bowl has had a tie-in with the regional Southwest (disbanded in 1995) and Big 12 Conferences since its inception.

Three years later, the biggest upset in the history of the Alamo Bowl occurred as 4th-ranked Kansas State lost a 37-34 shootout to unranked Purdue.
While many Alamo Bowl games have gone down to the wire, the 2000 contest certainly wasn't one of them. In the biggest rout in Alamo Bowl history #8 Nebraska crushed 19th-ranked Northwestern by a final of 66-17.
Since 2001, six games have been decided by a touchdown or less.
In 2002, Wisconsin upset #14 Colorado in the first overtime game in the history of the event. Six years later, the Alamo Bowl went into overtime again as Missouri got by Northwestern.
The Cornhuskers have recorded the most victories in the Alamo Bowl with three wins. In terms of appearances in the game, the Iowa Hawkeyes lead the way with four trips to San Antonio.
Many outstanding players have shined in the Alamo during the last two decades. Purdue quarterback Drew Brees (1998) and Texas signal-caller Colt McCoy (2006) are among the notable performers that have won MVP honors at the Alamo Bowl.
