Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film is reenacted on stage in this fun, fast-paced, romantic comedy. With a stimulating storyline and plenty of pep, this is a theater show not to be missed!
The 39 Steps is a verbatim play to be performed with a cast of just four. One actor plays Richard Hannay, one actress plays three women, and two other actors play every other character, including heroes, villains, women, men, children and even inanimate objects!
The 39 Steps is a story of Richard Hannay, who while at a London theater, grabs the hand of one frightened woman, Annabella Schmidt, when a fight breaks out and shots are fired. She convinces him, in the midst of the chaos, to take her back to his flat. It is there she tells Richard that she is a spy, and there are assassins out to kill her because she uncovered a plot to steal British military secrets. The assassins are a part of the espionage organization called the 39 Steps.
The next morning, Richard awakens to find Annabella stabbed to death with a bread knife. He quickly sneaks out of the home and takes a train to Scotland where he attempts to find a man Annabella tells him about. During his travels, he notices that police are on his trail. He runs into one of the train compartments and kisses its occupant, a woman named Pamela. She breaks away from his embrace and finds the police. He jumps off the train and escapes.
He finds the man Annabella spoke of (the man with the missing finger joint), Professor Jordan, and the Professor shoots him and leaves him for dead. The bullet does not kill Richard, though, and he flees once more. He heads to the police, but they don't believe him, and he escapes through a window.
After a number of hilarious scenes where Richard finds himself in many uncomfortable situations, he returns to the theater, where he figures out how the espionage organization works just as the police are about to haul him away.
