Syracuse Orange Tickets: Historical Overview
In basketball, the Syracuse Orange played as an independent team until joining the Big East Conference in 1979-80. Into the early seventies, the program had appeared in just two NCAA tournaments. In the last 39 years, Syracuse has been a part of March Madness on 32 occasions.
Current head coach Jim Boeheim has been on the sidelines for the Orange since the 1976-77 campaign. With 856 wins, he is one of the most successful coaches in the history of the game.
Syracuse was also a football independent for many years until arriving in the Big East in 1991. Longtime head coach Ben Schwartzwalder (1949-73) turned the Orange into a national power during the fifties. He was noted for coaching future Pro Football Hall of Fame running backs Jim Brown, Floyd Little and Larry Csonka at Syracuse.
In the last four decades, the Orange football team has been overshadowed by the school's hoops squad more often than not.
Championship Seasons
Led by star forward Carmello Anthony, the 2002-03 Syracuse Orange won the NCAA basketball championship. In 1959, star running back Ernie Davis (won 1961 Heisman Trophy) paced the Orange to a national title in football during a perfect 11-0 season.

The Syracuse Orange have the unique distinction of using the same venue for both basketball and football. The Carrier Dome opened in 1980. For basketball, the facility is arranged to have a capacity of 34,616. The size of the venue has enabled Syracuse to rank very high in basketball attendance over the years. For football, the stadium's capacity is 49,250.

A conference battle against the West Virginia Mountaineers will be the marquee affair on this season's home schedule.
