Pioneering a "new metal" or "rock hybrid" sound, Sevendust combines traditional heavy metal music with flavors of pop music, hip-hop, R&B and industrial rock.
The collaborations Sevendust has made with other artists have been one of the biggest keys to their success. They have headlined or opened for numerous cult-followed groups, including Megadeath, Creed, Godsmack and Metallica. They've also become staples in the popular tours of Ozzy Ozbourne's Ozzfest, Iggy Pop's R.O.A.R. Fest and the Tattoo the Earth Tour.
The new metal vibe of Sevendust means many of their lyrics are socially conscious and their music is well liked by many in the mainstream, as well as hard rock loyalists.
The History of Sevendust Tickets
Sevendust was formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1995 under the name Crawlspace by drummer Morgan Rose, who said his parents' love of music (they took him to David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust tour in the 1970s) set him on his path. He also said his father taught him the guitar.
The group signed with TVT in 1996 and soon after hired Jay French as their manager, who was the former guitarist for Twisted Sister. Sevendust then recorded their self-titled, debut album in 1997, after changing their name. Sevendust went gold and its popularity was likely propelled by their television concert, Sevendust: Live and Loud.
Sevendust released their second album, Home, in 1999; this album also went gold. Although it experienced commercial success, the members of the band dismissed this album, saying it didn't represent them accurately as a band. Nonetheless, Sevendust toured for 39 consecutive months following the release of Home.
The music of Sevendust, in the upcoming years, took a backseat as several members dealt with drug abuse. In addition to Rose overdosing on cocaine in 1999, Sevendust also lost one of its crew members to a drug overdose.
They released their third album, Animosity, in 2001. This album featured a wide range of genres, from soft ballads to heavy metal music. This album included a few songs that showcased their lead vocalist Witherspoon's strong vocal abilities and range.
Sevendust has released albums nearly every two years, with their most recent album, Alpha, in 2007.
