New York Rangers Tickets History: Perseverance Pays Off
Year in and year out, the Rangers would race towards the Cup, knowing that their last Stanley Cup came way back in 1940. For the hockey fans in New York, at least the Rangers were the only team in town...or were they? Not only did the Islanders come to the area in 1972, but it only took the Islanders eight years to win their first cup! And they would rattle off three in a row to boot!
Chants of "1940!" would reign down whenever the Rangers would play on Islanders home ice. Then the New Jersey Devils showed up just across the river, and it didn't take them long to begin a winning tradition. The Rangers had Phil Esposito, Ron Duguay, Dave Maloney, and Anders Hedberg and a Vidal Sasson commercial, but no championships since 1940! Many Rangers faithful blamed it on the "Curse" that originated when the Rangers management burnt the mortgage to Madison Square Garden in the bowl of the cup during the 1940 winning celebration.
End of the Curse!
Thankfully, the curse was broken, and today you can see the best hockey in the city with your own New York Rangers tickets!
In 1992, the Rangers landed Mark Messier, one of the greatest leaders the NHL had ever seen. Instrumental in the dynasty years of the Edmonton Oilers, he had five Stanley Cups to his credit, as he was a player with exceptional speed, strength, and power. His best attribute may have been his mere presence in the locker room, and in 1994, he guided his team into the playoffs.
With teammates Adam Graves, Essa Tikkanen, Craig MacTavish, Glenn Anderson, and Brian Leetch among others, the Rangers had to beat the cross town Devils in order to advance to the finals. Down in the best of seven 3 games to 2, Messier would take a page from Babe Ruth and Joe Namath and GUARANTEE a game 6 victory. He would end up with a hat trick and a trip back to The Garden for a seventh and deciding game.
In what would become one of the most thrilling contests in history, the Rangers prevailed in double overtime to advance to the finals. The Rangers would beat the Canucks in the finals to win the Stanley Cup and end the curse!
