In the first half of the 20th century, Fielding Yost and Fritz Crisler were notable coaches for the Wolverines. More recently, Bo Schembechler (1969-89) and Lloyd Carr (1995-2007) enjoyed strong runs on the sidelines for Michigan.
Overall, the Wolverines have captured 42 Big 10 championships. The university has appeared in 40 bowl games as well.
While the hoops program hasn't been able to match the lofty football accomplishments, the Wolverines have enjoyed some success on the hardwood. The school's most recent national title came in 1997. In an undefeated season, Carr guided the school to a pristine championship.
In basketball, the 1989-90 squad reached the NCAA title game under head coach Steve Fisher. With a couple of free throws in the final seconds, the Wolverines knocked off Seton Hall for the championship.
