The Los Angeles Galaxy is one of the ten original teams in Major League Soccer (MLS). From 1996-2002, the Galaxy competed at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Since 2003, the organization has played its home outings at the Home Depot Center (capacity of 27,000) in Carson, California.

In the history of Major League Soccer, the Galaxy has been one of the most successful franchises in the league. With the exception of a three-year stretch from 2006-08, Los Angeles has never missed the MLS playoffs.

In the debut season of the league, the Los Angeles Galaxy competed in the first MLS Cup match. Against D.C. United in Foxboro Massachusetts, the Galaxy dropped the championship game in overtime by a final of 3-2.

Three years later, the two franchises met again in Foxboro in the MLS Cup. In this matchup, D.C. United prevailed by a count of 2-0.

In 2001, Los Angeles had a third opportunity to win an MLS title. In a contest against the San Jose Earthquakes in Columbus, Ohio, the Galaxy fell again in the MLS Cup with 2-1 setback in overtime.

In the following season, Los Angeles would finally breakthrough to snag a championship win. In a hostile environment, the Galaxy defeated the New England Revolution in Foxboro by a final of 1-0 in double overtime. After winning the MLS regular season scoring title, Carlos Ruiz scored the game's only goal to bring LA a championship.

In an MLS Cup rematch in 2005, the Galaxy stopped the Revolution again with a 1-0 overtime triumph.

In 2009, Los Angeles reached the MLS Cup for a sixth time, but lost to Real Salt Lake.
