Born and raised in Southern California, Gary Allan was always close to music, as his mother insisted that the family's guitars always remain visible in the home.  At the age of thirteen, he began playing in honky tonks with his father.

As a high school graduate, Gary Allan and his friends played in the band the Honky Tonk Wranglers and would often play to packed venues, but still needed more money to take the next step.  Gary took a job selling cars, and one day, he left a demo tape in the glove box of a car purchased by a wealthy couple. When the couple discovered that he was the singer, they wrote him a check for $12,000. This independent funding allowed Allan to go to Nashville in 1995 to record some of his best songs.

Eventually, Gary would sign his first record deal with Decca, and in 1996, he produced his first album "Used Heart For Sale."  It advanced to the top 20 of the charts and produced a Top 10 country hit with the track "Her Man."  He would go on to record six albums over the next decade, which would include no less than seven top ten hit country singles!
