The first Capital One Bowl was played in 1947 at the Citrus Bowl stadium (capacity of 70,000) in Orlando. From 1947-82, the postseason game was known as the Tangerine Bowl.
In the first 25 years of the event, the game was a showcase for teams from smaller conferences. The Ohio Valley and Mid-American Conferences were among the leagues that had tie-ins for the game during this period.
In the mid-seventies, the Orlando bowl game grew to include more notable teams from regional conferences, like the SEC and ACC.
After being played in mid-to-late December, the Capital One Bowl moved to New Year's Day in 1987.
Since 1993, the Capital One Bowl has matched a top squad from the SEC against one of the elite clubs from the Big 10 Conference. With several of the BCS series bowl games now being played after January 1st, the Capital One Bowl has emerged as one of the premier postseason contests to ring in the New Year.

Even though the Capital One Bowl began with some small conference teams in its early history, there were still a number of exciting games and great players that competed in Orlando during this time.
Future Pro Football Hall of Fame linebackers Willie Lanier (1966-Morgan State) and Jack Lambert (1972-Kent State) captured MVP honors at the Tangerine Bowl. In more recent times, Cris Collinsworth (1980-Florida), Peyton Manning (1997-Tennessee) and Matthew Stafford (2009-Georgia) have been some of the other notable players to the game's MVP award.
In terms of exciting games at the Capital One Bowl, it will be difficult to top the finish in the 2005 contest. Against the defending national champion LSU Tigers, the Iowa Hawkeyes completed a 56-yard touchdown pass on the game's final play for a dramatic 30-25 victory.
Overall, Tennessee has posted the most Capital One Bowl victories with four. The Vols are one of five teams that have played in the postseason contest on five occasions
