Flames originated in Atlanta in 1972, but moved to Calgary in 1980 to become the second NHL franchise to play in the Canadian province of Alberta along with Edmonton Oilers. Two teams are in proximity, and quite a rivalry has grown between them, actually becoming Battle of Alberta whenever they play each other.
Watching the Oilers win the Cup four out of five years in 80s was a tough pill to swallow for Flames, who were very talented themselves and routinely qualified for the post season. As a matter of fact, it was usually Oilers who would knock them out of playoffs in those years.
Only in 1986 did Flames get past Oilers and make it to the finals for the first time - only to be defeated by Montreal Canadians in five games. See the battle of Alberta with Calgary Flames tickets!
Flames continued their winning ways, but still had not raised the Cup. In 1989, they finished with a league best 117 points and home ice advantage throughout the playoffs. Their dreaded rival Edmonton had been ousted in the first round by Kings, and the table was set for Calgary Flames to make a run at cup. They had a roster rich in talent with Joe Nieuwendyk, Hakan Loob, Doug Gilmore, Lanny McDonald, Theo Fleury, Al MacInnes and Mike Vernon, among others. They would beat Canucks, Kings, and Blackhawks to make to finals for the second time in franchise history and earn a rematch with Canadians, who soundly beat them in 1986.
