The Notre Dame Fighting Irish is the most noted team in college football. The Notre Dame legend began to take shape in 1918 when Knute Rockne became the team's head coach. In 13 years on the sidelines, Rockne led the Fighting Irish to five undefeated campaigns and six seasons with only one defeat.

Frank Leahy (1941-43, 46-53) became the next legendary head coach at the school. He topped Rockne with six undefeated seasons during his tenure. Ara Parsegian (1964-74) and Lou Holtz (1986-96) also enjoyed great runs as Notre Dame head coaches.

Over the years, many of college football's biggest stars have suited up for the Fighting Irish. In fact, the school has yielded the most (seven) Heisman Trophy winners of any college.

In basketball, Notre Dame has appeared in 31 NCAA tournaments. The 1977-78 team made the university's lone trip to the Final Four.
