As one of college football's oldest bowl games, the Gator Bowl has a proud history. Gator Bowl tickets are always in high demand during the winter.

Gator Bowl Tickets: Historical Overview

The first Gator Bowl was played in 1946 in Jacksonville. Through 1993, the game was played at the Gator Bowl stadium before it was demolished to make way for a new stadium on the site. EverBank Field (capacity of 84,00) is the current venue for the Gator Bowl.

Initially, the first nine Gator Bowls were played on New Year's Day. From 1954-94, the game was held in late December. Since 1996, the Gator Bowl has been a part of the New Year's Day bowl lineup again.

For most of its history, teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Southeastern Conference (SEC) have been featured as one or both of the squads in the Gator Bowl matchups. From 1991-2010, the ACC had a tie-in for the game. In 2011, the Gator Bowl began a new arrangement to match the SEC against a Big 10 Conference foe each year.

In a bizarre scene, legendary Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes threw a punch at the Clemson player who made the interception. In the fallout from the shocking incident, Hayes was removed as Ohio State's head coach a few days later.
