About Prince

Prince Rogers Nelson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1958. Both of his parents were musicians; his father played piano and wrote songs and his mother was a jazz singer.

Prince's strong musical influence gripped him at an early age, and by the time he was seven, Prince had written his first tune titled, "Funk Machine." Prince's parents separated when Prince was 10, and he spent the rest of his childhood going between his father and his stepfather.

Prince's first band was formed while the musician was still in high school and included Prince's cousin, Morris Day, on the drums. The group played throughout the Minneapolis area, building a name for themselves first as Grand Central and then as Champagne.
