Formed in the South of France in the late seventies, the band was brought together by Nicolas and Andre Reyes, whose father was renowned flamenco artist Jose Reyes.  The brothers invited their cousins to join the band, and they found themselves traveling all over to perform leading a gypsy lifestyle - so they took the name the Gipsy Kings.  They would play weddings, festivals, and in the streets and gained popularity in and around France with their traditional and passionate music.

After producing two albums in the early eighties which attracted little notice, they landed time with visionary producer Claude Martinez.  He would convince the band to experiment with more of a progressive, pop oriented flamenco sound, and the results would thrust the band to world class status.

In 1988, they released "Gipsy Kings" with hit singles "Djobi Djobi" and "Bamboleo," which found high chart rankings all over Europe, including England.  They would ride this momentum and for the first time perform in the United States in 1989 in New York.

With their album remaining in the U.S. charts for more than 40 weeks and performing cover songs like "Hotel California," their popularity grew, and they signed with Sony Records in America.  Their first album under Sony would be "Mosaique" in 1989, which featured the hit song "Volare."
