David Cassidy was born on April 12, 1950, in New York City. As parents of actors, he was raised primarily by his maternal grandparents in New Jersey. At the age of six, he found out from neighborhood children that his parents had been divorced for two years but never told him. By 1956, his father remarried Shirley Jones.
In 1969, David Cassidy appeared in the Broadway musical, The Fig Leaves are Falling. A casting director caught sight of him and he quickly made the move to Los Angeles. He signed with Universal Studios in 1969 and appeared on a number of television shows. In wasn't until 1970, however, that he got his biggest break: the role of Keith Partridge, the son of Shirley Partridge (a.k.a. Shirley Jones).
David Cassidy soon became the hit and heartthrob of the show and was the lead singer for the show's recordings. Soon after, he recorded "I Think I Love You," which became an instant hit.
