Founded in 1881 by Henry Lee Higginson, the Boston Symphony Orchestra is considered to be one of five American orchestras commonly referred to as "The Big Five."  Its first conductor was Georg Henschel who was a close friend of Johannes Brahms, as Higginson was quoted as saying "The scheme, half baked, no doubt, was simply this: to give concerts of good music, very well performed, in such style as we had heard for years in Europe, to make fair prices for the tickets and then open wide the doors." 

In 1926, the Boston Symphony Orchestra would perform the first live concert over the radio waves, as one million radio listeners tuned in to NBC!  The orchestra's popularity would grow, as they would perform regular live radio broadcasts for the next 25 years. 

With a long list of distinguished conductors over the years such as Serge Koussevitzky, Charles Munch, Erich Leinsdorf, and William Steinberg, the Boston Symphony Orchestra also enjoys the significant honor of being the last orchestra conducted by the inspiring Leonard Bernstein!  While its history is decidedly European, James Levine became the first music director of the Orchestra in 2004 to be born in the US. 

The orchestra has also on occasion recorded film scores, including Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.
